21 Days of July

Day 1: At the Scent of Water

Hello there! Welcome to 21 Days of July, and thank you for doing this with me. It’s been a while since I wrote, and I’m just going to use the first few days to shake off the rust. I’ve been ruminating on doing this since the beginning of the year, and I almost backed out because I was trying to avoid starting what I cannot finish. But here we are. Thank you to those who sent in suggestions. You know it’s funny to see how the brain works. As soon as I shared my intention on my WhatsApp status, a few ideas started coming in. I still don’t know what I will write for every blog post, but then that’s the intriguing part of this challenge. I’ll write on everything that comes to mind within this timeline. It would be about my faith, my dreams, my desires, or simply what I’m learning. I’m also going to be writing about whatever you want me to share, if I can. It’s going to be an interesting ride! The posts can be long or short, depending on the inspiration that comes Today’s blog post is titled “At the Scent of Water,” and it’s for a reason. As I was in between sleep and wake on Monday, 29th June, I heard the word, but “there is hope for a tree…” This is from Job 14:7, but two verses down the line in verse 9, it says, “Yet at the scent of water.” And for me, it was a sign from God. I encourage you to read Job 14:7-9 if you can. You see, June was pretty hard for some reason; it was emotionally hard. I was on a good trajectory at the beginning of the year, and zap, it felt like something sucked the energy out of me. I stopped doing the things I normally do, and I was just living on autopilot. I showed up where I needed to be and then lay in my bed watching movies when I wasn’t, knowing fully well that there was a pile of deliverables waiting for me. While I’m still trying to figure out what happened in June, I know the only thing to do is run back to God.  I’m like, God, the year was going on well; what went wrong? And little by little, I started getting some instructions; one of them is to go through the Forty Days Soul Fast book by Dr. Cindy Trimm, which I started on Tuesday. I’m looking forward to unpacking what went wrong in June. So when I woke up with that verse, I knew it was God saying, “I got you.” There is hope for a tree, even if it is cut down… Yet, even at the scent of water. It didn’t even say at the drop of water or at the rain. Just the scent of water is enough to cause it to bud again. For me, that scent was what I experienced Monday morning when this scripture came to me, and it was the response I needed. I look forward to experiencing all of it.  It’s going to be cathartic working on this 21-day challenge. I can already sense it. As I was ending this, I got the nudge to leave you with a scripture every day, and the one that comes to mind right now is in 3 John, verse 2 (NIV). Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. And that’s where we wrap up today. On that note, let me welcome you to July!. July is the best month in the year. Don’t worry, you can take it up to God if you were born in a different month! See you tomorrow. And don’t forget to share with your friends. P.S. You can still fill out the form if there’s something you want me to share. HerePPS. This is also me working on my writing technique. If you have resources that can help, please share

Upgrade! The World Will Adjust

Happy New Year. I know what you’re thinking. But since this is the first time I’m writing to you officially, allow me to wish you a prosperous New Year. Welcome to my first blog post of the year. Having taken a break for over a year, I am thrilled to resume expressing my emotions and ideas through my writing. A sad part is that when I switched to my new website, I lost my previous blog posts. The positive news is that I have some of the drafts, so be sure to see a mix of old and new posts in the coming months.  Before I go into the main reason for writing today, I wanted to do a quick check-in and ask how you’re doing. How was January for you? For me, it felt like I spent 50 years in one month, no kidding. This has been my busiest January in years, and for the first few days, I was trying to stay afloat. January has been filled with exams, work, and attending Visioning Events to clarify my goals for 2026, and I’m glad it’s finally over. It also brings me to my next question: where is time running to? I mean, didn’t we just say happy New Year some days ago? How are we in February already? It feels like we’re just blinking, and by the time we open our eyes, a week has passed. And in the midst of this pace, I’m hoping that you find time for yourself to define how you want 2026 to look for you. Which is why I’m writing this particular post. Upgrade, and the world will adjust. In the early days of the year, my Mac notified me that I needed to update my WhatsApp on my desktop, and that was the inspiration for this post. I get those kinds of notifications, and I don’t think much of them until this January. The first thing I noticed as I was done with the update was the new features; they were not so glaring, but I think my subconscious needed to pick them up. A little reshuffling of the headers, and the font became a little smaller. At first, I was irritated because I was already used to the way I previously used WhatsApp, and I was grumbling at the mental changes I had to make to adjust to the new features. But my behavior caught my attention and inspired me to write a blog post. What happened? After a few days, I observed that I had successfully adapted to the changes, and my brain had become accustomed to them.  I’m sure we’ve experienced similar phenomena with all the many apps that we use daily. But it got me thinking. Products, apps, and services are always launched in a preliminary version and constantly upgraded until discontinued. Sometimes it even takes them months to work on just one feature and release it.  If we understand these facts about products, why don’t we insist on such improvements for our lives? If we follow the lead of those who create products, we have the potential to achieve much more. Their incremental additions and sometimes subtractions should be our motivation. An upgrade can be anything at all that increases your value; an upgrade can be spiritual, health-wise, mental, financial, etc. If we take life one upgrade at a time, we can do it and become so much more. And this is my encouragement to you as you continue this year. Don’t let big dreams and desires overwhelm you, but rather, break it down one upgrade at a time and look at what you can become at the end of this year.  I hope the next time you see a new feature on your apps, it becomes a reminder that you can also incrementally upgrade your life, and you know what? The world will adjust! Love,Oluwaseun Newton
